The Great Acting Blog: “The Extraordinary Quality Of Big Goals”

Constantly remind yourself of the big goals you’re pursuing, remind yourself of the end product you’re aiming for, especially when the goal is going to take a little bit of time to accomplish.

Why? Because this will help to prevent you from being sucked in, distracted and demoralised by the minutae of everyday living, and ensure that our big energy is spent on the important stuff that actually helps those big goals get done.

Big goals are stressful, that’s because they’re big, they’re outside our comfort zone, we need to enter into unchartered territory in order to accomplish them. This can have the affect of blowing small problems out of proportion – we want to deal with the big stuff, and spend as little time and energy as possible on the small stuff, which is precisely why a small problem can drive us nuts – we sense that our limited resources are not being used in the most effective way. By reminding ourselves of the big, end goal, our focus is corrected and that tension just melts away. Whatever problem it is, it will still need to be dealt with, but we can do so now with the minimum of fuss and energy – we hardly even notice it because we’re focussed on the big thing.

Fixing our minds on big goals is energising, the goal itself is exciting to us, that’s why chose it in the first place. We can draw sustaining strength from big goals as we go along, and that is their true, extraordinary quality.
