The Great Acting Blog: “The Rules Of Life Are The Same Off Stage As On It”

When we play a scene it’s crucial that we pick the right action for it. Not only does it need to be in line with the writer’s intentions, but it also needs to be an action which we find compelling, which we are excited about doing. When we do this, our imaginations are liberated, our performances are energised, driven and focussed.

That’s also why the action in the scene needs to be chosen by the actor himself, and not by the director, because only the actor himself knows which actions will light him up. The director may pick an action which is simply not of any interest to the actor, and so his playing of it will be less than inspired.

As always, the rules of life are the same off-stage as they are on it. If you pick life and career goals which are truly exciting to you, then energy, focus and drive will rarely be an issue.
