The Great Acting Blog: “Improve Your Acting By Doing Some Directing”

I often think actors should do some directing even if they have no ambitions for a directing career. I think it’s useful because you get to view things from the other side of the fence so to speak.

You get to see what a poorly prepared actor looks like (shocking actually).

You see how an actor’s attitude towards the production can affect it.

You see how valuable good manners and professional courtesy are.

You can be reminded of just how moving honest work can be.

You become acutely aware of just how obsolete so much direction is.

You see how truly exciting actors who make audacious choices are.

Of course, when you go back to being an actor, you can apply  the lessons learnt and improve yourself immeasurably. You may even enjoy a new found creativity and independence in your work.
