The Great Acting Blog: “Crushing Disappointment”

Completion is difficult because completion can cause disappointment. We can sabotage an important project at the crucial moment in order to avoid the disappointment of the finished result being less than we hoped it would be. The moment of truth is never arrived at.

It’s impossible to go through life without disappointment. It’s impossible to grow and progress without undertaking projects where we don’t know the outcome in advance, where we risk disappointment. Most of the actor’s life is like this, in fact.

Disappointment cannot be avoided, it can only be faced up to and accepted. However, by working to continually improve our understanding of what it is we do, we are able to cope with disappointment better – it will not crush us.
