The Great Acting Blog: “Creative Capacity”

I used to hold the egalitarian view that everyone had more or less the same capacity for creativity. This was based on the idea that creativity stems from the imagination and everyone has an imagination. I believed that some people simply chose to pay more attention to their imagination, they chose to cultivate it, while others chose not to or had a lifestyle which didn’t permit them to.

But now I’m not so sure.

Based on my experiences and observations, I’m starting to think that creativity is like IQ and some people are just born with more than others. I say this because I have seen too many actors incapable of finding new ways of playing a scene, or simply fail to express very much despite repeated efforts. I used to think this was down to laziness or a lack of drive to be a great actor. Now I think it may be down to possessing a low creative capacity.

I am going to do some investigating on this and will report back. Any recommended reading would be hugely appreciated.
