The Great Acting Blog: “Continually Serve Your Life’s Goal”

Remember that an acting career unfolds over a 30 or 40 year period. It’s important not to get too wrapped up in the present moment, not to be overly influenced by it. We shouldn’t exaggerate our problems, most are just bumps in the road rather than catastrophes. When confronted by a problem, we must ensure that our solutions serve the overall picture we want to create for our careers.

We must continually remind ourselves of our overall goal, our life’s goal. We must look at what we are doing right now, and ask ourselves how it serves this goal.

Be careful then, that a decision you make now, a decision that may make you momentarily happy, doesn’t take you on to a trajectory that bends away from your overall goal.

Don’t flip-flop, that is: if you flip between actions which take you away from your overall goal, and actions which serve it, you will severely impair your effectiveness – ask yourself:  how can you expect to compete with actors who remain focussed all the way along the line? That’s the problem for actors who take a break from it then come back, it just gets harder and harder until it’s too hard to continue at all.

Similarly, don’t make life decisions which lead to a situation whereby it is basically impossible for you to achieve your most challenging, most meaningful career goals (only you know what those decisions might be). This creates a self-deception, an excuse, instead of admitting that you failed, you pretend to yourself (and everyone else) that “life” scuppered your plans.

Stay fixed on your life’s goal, and ensure everything you do serves it.
