The Great Acting Blog: “Accept Yourself”

It’s comforting to continually question ourselves, to focus on our self-doubt, to focus on our short comings because it can be used as an excuse for inaction. The moment of truth is continually deferred, so we can walk around deluding ourselves that that thing we’re never actually going to do is a life’s goal. We can sit around bars and salons explaining our ideas to everyone and sneering at those who dare to question us, without ever having to prove that the proof of the pudding is in the eating, in fact there is no pudding, only waffle.

The alternative of course, is to accept ourselves. Accept that, yes we’re far from perfect,  but that we’ve got it within us to do whatever it is we want to do, that whatever challenges rear their ugly heads along the way, we’ll do our best to face them down. Focus on strengths and strengthen weaknesses, focus on solutions rather than obsessing about problems, and know that we needn’t accept the limits of our accomplishments to date, in fact, that’s the whole point of taking on ever greater goals: to smash through those limits.

We need to accept ourselves today in order to accomplish more tomorrow. The alternative is stagnation and self-deception.
