We hear the phrase “independent filmmaker” too much these days, and most times it’s used in-accurately.

It’s time to repeat on old mantra.

Independence has got nothing whatsoever to do with the means of production or lack thereof. It’s got nothing to with aesthetics or the way the dress or whatever it is you do to distinguish yourself or your work from the crowd.

Independence is about how you think. It rests within the will of the individual artist.
