The Great Acting Blog: “Why Passion Helps Us”

The war against our inner fears must be waged on a daily basis, it never goes away, and passion is essential to this undertaking. Passion awakens our boldness and our drive, it helps us to operate from a position of love and generosity, and so overcome our fears.

Many actors quit because they lose this internal battle, or are no longer willing to keep fighting it*. Their petty ego gets the better of their passion and they settle for the safe job with regular pay, as oppose to continuing with the actor’s life, which is one of imagination and possibility rather than security. Looked at from a slightly different angle, we might say that those who fall away are perhaps not as passionate as they might have been.

There are those however, who remain committed to their work day-by-day, continually facing down their fears. They know and accept that this struggle is ongoing, and they have the passion to develop the to0ls and the strength to keep going, to keep growing, to keep progressing, and eventually stun themselves by how far they have come.

*Often there is an excuse, something like; “I’ll give up if I haven’t made it by a certain age” – but this really is just a get out clause, or an escape clause to be more accurate.
