The Great Acting Blog: “When The Real Test Begins”
Like the protagonist of the play, we are on a quest, and at certain points in that quest certain ugly things, which we were not expecting, will rear themselves, and it will dawn on us that the quest is going to be a lot more difficult than we originally thought.
Do we quit in such moments? Do we spit the dummy? Will we allow the wheels to come off?
Or will we dig a little deeper within ourselves, redouble our efforts, stay focussed and hang in there?
It’s easy to be strong and stoical and impressive when everything is running smoothly, much harder to do when the pressure mounts and fatigue sets in.
Whatever it is you’re trying to do: do not quit, see it through to it’s natural conclusion. You will either achieve your goal or you will not, those are the only two outcomes. If you do not, then you will at least have gained the benefit of the experience.
Perhaps the only time to quit is when you no longer think the goal you have set yourself is worth the time and the hassle.
Otherwise, remember that the real test begins when events fail to unfold in the way you thought they would.
