The Great Acting Blog: “We Need Your Idealism”

Maintain your idealism, maintain the image or idea that inspires you because it will help you to overcome the obstacles that will inevitably be placed in your way. Your idealism will give you the drive to get up off the canvas one more time.

It is difficult for actors, many of whom are routinely treated with cynicism, or at best indifference. It can sometimes seem like there is nothing around worth fighting for, or that the world doesn’t want our fight, so why bother?

Yes, it is difficult to maintain our idealism, and it’s so easy to become infected by that cynicism – to stop caring in order to avoid feelings of disappointment.

However, we the audience, need your idealism. We need you to believe, so that we can believe.

Remember:  your performance is an image of all that you are.
