The Great Acting Blog: “True Creativity Contains Boldness And Excitement”
True creativity is when a creative decision we make feels bold and exciting.
True creativity takes us out of our comfort zone, it brings into the world something that did not exist before. In so doing, we charter new waters, we go out on a limb, we expand our field of thought and perception, we go beyond the edge of the village so to speak. This act of stepping into the unknown creates the frisson which is then transmitted to the work, and finally to the audience.
When our creative decision-making lacks this sense of boldness and excitement, it’s likely that we are not truly creating, but merely rehashing old material, material which we have known to work in the past. We’ve all met the hack actor who maintains a selection of off-the-shelf characters, and merely picks the one he feels best applies to the situation he is confronted by. The results of this approach are usually bland and listless because no true creation has taken place.
True creativity then, engenders a sense of boldness and excitement, which remains present in the finished work too.
