The Great Acting Blog: “They May Hate Something You Did, But Not Everything”
I once curated a program of short films. At the end of the screening a friend approached me to say that he had hated what he saw. I wasn’t offended, but I did respect his opinion and was saddened by his view. The next time I put up a screening I didn’t invite him because I thought it wouldn’t be his cup of tea. Later, I ran into him and he said that he was disappointed that I had not told him about the screening. I gave my reasons, then he said he wanted to be kept informed in future.
The lesson is that someone may hate something you’ve done but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll hate everything you do. So, there is no point in getting despondent about negative responses to your efforts – someone may be interested in your work in general, just not that particular piece.
Remain open minded, give people another try.
