The Great Acting Blog: “The Perfect Storm Of Meaninglessness”

There can be myriad responses to our work, good and bad and indifferent. We cannot then, be swayed by each one we encounter, we cannot strive to meet each response.  If we did, we would betray our work during the ensuing flux, we would forget why we created it in the first place.

Similarly, we mustn’t allow ourselves to become gripped by outcome nostalgia. This is where we have a fixed idea about how we want people to respond to our work, but when that response is not forthcoming, we neurotically try to bend the facts in an effort to delude ourselves that the longed for outcome is in fact happening.

When we mix outcome nostalgia with trying to meet every response, we create a perfect storm of meaninglessness, whereby we run round on the spot chasing our tail, driving ourselves insane while our lives pass us by.

The only way to deal with the myriad responses to our work, is to maintain our equanimity, stay rational, and remember why we made the creative choices we did.
