The Great Acting Blog: “The Ineffective Actress”

Some years ago I was sat on the sidelines during a rehearsal and the actress next to me was pre-occupied by two notebooks. The first contained pages and pages of peoples’ names and telephone numbers and the second was blank. She was casually hand writing each name and number from the first notebook into the blank one. This struck me immediately as being a complete and utter waste of time, after all there was nothing wrong with the first notebook, so why bother? I am always unnerved by the thought of quotidian tasks taking my focus away from my important goals, and I just couldn’t get the notebook thing out of my mind. I wondered if there wasn’t some hidden, important reason for her to duplicate them and eventually my curiosity got the better of me.

– “were you copying names and numbers from one notebook into another earlier?”, I asked.
– “yes”, she replied.
– “what for, there was nothing wrong with the old one.”

– “yes, but I just wanted a new one”. She said with a verbal shrug.

That’s not really my cup of tea but fair enough I suppose, and the reality is it’s got nothing to do with me and if it makes her happy then so much the better. Having said all that, I was more than a little perplexed when we came to do our scene and she hadn’t learned her lines.
