The Great Acting Blog: “Terry-Thomas Embodies The Qualities Of Great Acting”
Growing up watching old British movies on daytime television whenever I was off school ill, I became a big fan of Terry-Thomas. I always loved the daft comedy in films like Monte Carlo Or Bust and School For Scoundrels. So I was delighted when I stumbled recently, upon an old five minute comedy monologue which he performed on The Judy Garland Show.
I believe his performance here, besides it’s technical excellence, is devoid of the self-protective irony or the pretence of being superior to the audience that blights so much work nowadays. Infact, Terry-Thomas is not self-concerned in the least, his intent is only to delight the audience. He really embodies the warmth, the generosity, the desire to connect and communicate, that I believe all acting needs to have in order to be considered great.
Besides all that, the clip makes for a bit of good old fashioned fun on a Sunday afternoon.
