The Great Acting Blog: “Strengthening Weaknesses”

We all have weaknesses which can cause us a great deal of pain. Often though, the real problem is not the weakness itself, but the fear it creates within us, fear of how the weakness makes us feel, fear of how it can destabilise us. It’s this fear which prevents us from strengthening our weakness.

However, the fear must be faced down, we must put the fear to one side, because that’s the only way to get at the weakness. We must continually do the thing we’re weak at, we must continually experience the pain it causes us, we must go through that process. Every time we do, we get more used to it, better at handling the fear and the pain, and so more capable of strengthening the weakness. This may destabilise us at the beginning but eventually we will improve ourselves and so progress.
