The Great Acting Blog: “Some Words Of Wisdom From The Great Woody Allen”
Woody Allen knows a thing or two about building a body of work. Over 50 years he’s made 48 feature films, playing leading roles in most of them too, and he’s made them on his own terms, with complete artistic freedom. He shows what can be possible, that an actor can be more than he is expected to be. Over to Woody…
“Don’t read about yourself, don’t have big discussions about your work, just keep your nose to the grindstone. And don’t think about any of the perks. Don’t think about money or laudatory things. The less you can think about yourself the better.”
“In an art form, you start from scratch all the time. You gain a little technique over the years, but you don’t get better where it counts. Inspirationally – that’s in the lap of the gods. ”
“I made the statement years ago which is often quoted that 80 percent of life is showing up. People used to always say to me that they wanted to write a play, they wanted to write a movie, they wanted to write a novel, and a couple of people that did it were 80 percent of the way to having something happen. All the other people struck out without ever getting that pack. They couldn’t do it, that’s why they don’t accomplish a thing, they don’t do the thing, so once you do it, if you actually write your film script, or write your novel, you are more than half way towards something good happening. So that was my biggest life lesson that has worked. All others have failed me. ”
“if you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything innovative.”
“oh, I’ve stolen from the best.”
