The Great Acting Blog: “Self-Doubt – Exiting The Comfort Zone”
Self-doubt is that feeling we get whenever we intend to do something which will take us out of our comfort zone. Perhaps we need to ask a powerful person for helpĀ or we want to start our own production company rather than waiting around hoping to be picked, or maybe we’re contemplating whether to continue as an actor at all, all of these can arouse our self-doubt. Similarly in the rehearsal room, we’ve known actors who seem to breeze around the place without a care in the world, their work is the same on the first day of rehearsals as it is on the last – they are operating in a comfort zone, they intend to give a performance they’ve already done before. The actor striving for something extra however, something beyond what he has done before, will be riddled with self-doubt because he does not know if he will get there.
I don’t think self-doubt is avoidable if we want to accomplish ever bigger and better goals, however I do think we need to see it for what it is – a signal that we are exiting our comfort zone.
