The Great Acting Blog: “Reverse Bad Habits”
Someone asked me recently if there was a shortcut to learning lines. There isn’t one, or if there is, then I don’t know about it (if you do have one, I’m sure you could probably make a fortune with it). For me, line learning is about good old fashioned discipline plus a little bit of elbow grease.
But what lesson can we learn from the process of learning lines ?
That we can make the human propensity for habit work to our advantage. We memorise the lines of dialogue until them become habitual, which is to say that they become so ingrained in us, that in performance, they rise to the surface of our mind at the right moment by their own accord. This process can be applied to all aspects of our lives. Bad habits can be reversed and turned into good habits through repetition.
Identify your bad habits and begin reversing them today. You might find the results exhilarating.
