The Great Acting Blog: “Never Go Back To The Old Thing”
If you’re searching around for the next thing, never go backwards. It’s easy to return to that old director from way back when or that old theatre company or that old anything. It’s easy to go back because we’re retreading old steps, slipping into an old groove, falling into old habits. We know exactly what to do because we’ve done it all before, we know what to expect, it’s comforting and easy, we can enjoy the warm glow of competence. Going back to the old thing requires less aggression on our part, we don’t need to force our way through the unknown. Rehashing an old conquest however, is a false accomplishment, we may be able to fool ourselves for a time but that feeling of emptiness will serve as a reminder that we have not been properly tested. New challenges may offer anxiety and uncertainty, but unless we face up to them, we will be stunted aesthetically, intellectually and emotionally.
