The Great Acting Blog: “Make Yourself Indispensable”
How can an actor distinguish himself from the pack (and dying your hair blue, doesn’t count)?
How can we add value to a production?
How can we make ourselves indispensable within a production? How can we make it so that a director would have to include us in his next production? Or create a situation whereby he feels he’s missing out by not using us again?
How much does the director value the contribution of the actor? If the director doesn’t know anything about the aesthetics of acting, then great acting will have no impact on him – this director is not worth worrying about. But there is another kind of director, one who longs to have the highest calibre of performances in his productions, and actors need to support this director, because by supporting him the actor is supporting himself, and helping to perpetuate productions which value the craft of acting. Everyone’s a winner.
Yes, there are loads and loads of actors, it’s true. But there aren’t that many great actors. Create a situation whereby if the director needs someone like you in their next production, they most certainly will not look anywhere else.
Make yourself indispensable.
