The Great Acting Blog: “Make Some Noise About Actors You Admire”
It seems some performances are praised to the rafters by the mainstream press, when often I think the acting in question is false and self-conscious. Other performances however, are a model of truth and simplicity and generosity, and yet are almost universally ignored. It seems that once the mainstream media has set the weather for a certain performance, then that filters through to the public at large who then adopt a similar stance. The performance in question is then embedded in our culture as being “great” (or not, or ignored as the case may be).
I do not mean to be a grouch but I question the situation because there seems to be so much good work going unnoticed, the praise seems to be given always to the same few. I believe it’s important that performances which are due credit get given it because then they influence the work of other, younger actors. If falsity and manipulation are deemed to be successful, then it make sense that young actors coming through will follow suit.
I think it’s important to make some noise about the performances we admire but which are not getting attention. That means writing blogposts about them, chatting them up and spreading the word. This helps to strengthen and promote the kind of acting we want to see.
We have to create and fight for the culture we want to participate in if we cannot already find it.
