The Great Acting Blog: “It’s Not Failure, It’s An Opportunity”
Know this:
- Your acting career will not unfold how you thought it would.
- It will not fit the image you had in your mind.
- It will not move along as quickly as you would like.
- Your impact will not be as potent as you would have hoped.
- The world will not care about your work as much as you would want it to.
But this gap between what you wanted to achieve and what actually happened, is not “failure”, it is an opportunity to combine your ideas with the reality and so create a new way to achieve your goal.Â
Seeing the gap between what you wanted to achieve and what actually happened as a failure, is the wrong move. It can be a fatal way of thinking and result in you quitting (and that actually is failure). People who think this way are unable to see the opportunity in the gap. It’s not easy to see it, and there are no stock answers, it depends on each individual’s situation.
It’s a question of inventing practical, controllable ways of filling the gap, which will then enable you to proceed to your goal. What you need to do is indicated by whatever you lack. Therein lies the new way forward.
