The Great Acting Blog: “In Praise Of Pretentiousness”
Pretentiousness in anyone over the age of 20 is hideous and loathsome. Pretentiousness in anyone under that age however, can be a good thing.
For what is pretentiousness in a young person? Well, very often it is creative energy which has been poorly allocated. It is the pretence of artistic accomplishment. In time however, if this young person stays committed and does not desert the artistic life due to the pressures of a regular life, then this error will correct itself: and real artistic achievements will follow.
Give me a gobby, chaotic, pretentious 17 year old over the organised teen who knows how to pass exams any day of the week. Our artistic leaders are drawn from the first group, and the bureaucrats who try to stifle them from the second.
