The Great Acting Blog: “How Can Great Acting Win?”
One of the major problems is that many theatres and many filmmakers are not looking to acting in order to make their name. That is, they are not concerned with being known as having great acting in their productions. Decent, competent acting will do for them, so long as the actor in question fits the bill. The problem here for actors generally is that, in a hopelessly oversubscribed profession, merely competent will do, being great doesn’t give you an advantage. Merely competent will not enable you to win every time of course, you will have to wait for the wheel to turn in your favour every once in a while (which is basically what most actors do) but nicely competent will suffice in general.
Being a great actor will only give you an advantage if that’s what the production is looking for, and are able to identify it when they see it. These productions however, are rare.
So, the question is: how can those ambitious enough to want to be great actors, ensure their dedication and effort receive their just desserts?

My answer to this one would be to try and find a sympathetic director who knows that ONLY great performances will lift the work above the ordinary.
