The Great Acting Blog: “Honesty Creates Confidence”

Remember that bold creative choices can easily turn into reckless creative choices and loss of control. When this happens we are liable to become unhinged when we’re later faced with a less than enthusiastic audience. Why? Because our recklessness is a symptom of our disingenuousness –  we made those choices to serve our vanity rather than the work itself. The act of recklessness creates the emotion which distracts us from our feelings of falsity. This may have given us a kick when we created the work, but it won’t be much fun once we’ve put it out into the world – the falsity will out itself, and undermine our confidence.

The way to create confidence then, is to work honestly – striving to serve not our vanity but the work at hand. Our pure intentions mean that the various responses to our effort are less likely to affect us negatively.
