The Great Acting Blog: “Great Artists Dare Not Primp And Preen”

Those who strut and preen after even the most meagre artistic accomplishment, are clearly not aiming high enough. Their arrogance and excessive pride are evidence that they’re operating in a comfort zone and not doing anything truly interesting, which is to say that they’re not doing anything which scares them.

Great artists become great because they set themselves new and more difficult challenges day-by-day. This means that they never quite arrive at the point of comfort, everyday they need to find the strength to reach deep inside of themselves in order to meet the new challenges. This continual demand, this constant striving to achieve new heights, keeps them grounded, it brings humility, and it brings perspective – they know what it feels like to come up short, they are acutely aware of their own weaknesses and limitations, and they know what it feels like to be knocked on to the canvas and have to pick themselves up again.

Great artists daren’t primp and preen.
