The Great Acting Blog: “Give To The Community And Be Part Of It’s Success”
The audition process functions as a simple command and reward structure – do as you’re told and hopefully you will be awarded the prize of work. It’s essentially a straightforward, technical process. Auditions can be frustrating but you don’t have to give much of yourself, they are just transactions, they are just business. There is nothing wrong with that of course, but know that the price for this simplicity is inefficiency and powerlessness – trying to get work through auditioning is very time-consuming and the actor has very little say regarding the outcome.
Being part of a community however, is a very different story. It’s about committing yourself to making the community stronger by offering what you can give to it. It means moving out of your comfort zone and making yourself vulnerable by going out on a limb for the group members, it means trusting them. It also means investing in the group even though there may not be straightforward rewards in place. Being part of a community means taking care and taking responsibility.
Flirting with a community is not the same thing. Pretending to be part of a community, infiltrating it in order to see what you can take will not work, because eventually you’ll be found out – after all, you cannot repress your true intentions forever and you cannot fake commitment for long. Being a fraud only works short term. Eventually, your mendacity will reveal itself, and when it does, don’t be surprised if you’re not invited to the party when the community becomes successful.
