The Great Acting Blog: “Emotional Fascists”

I’ve always loathed those who are unable to keep their insecurities under some sort of control. Yes acting can be a tricky business, and yes we are making ourselves vulnerable and all that, but we really need to control ourselves. And, to be fair, most of us do, most of the time.

However, there are the “special” few, the emotional fascists who behave only so long as everyone is either kissing their ass or holding their hand. Dealing with them is an utter minefield, you have to tread very carefully because one false move and they explode out of nowhere. Then there is the unspoken passive-aggression and the politicking against you – suddenly you’re in a conflict without even realising it, because somewhere along the line something you did triggered their insecurities, now they’re out to get you in order to make themselves feel comfortable again. Often in the group, they create an atmosphere of tension, inhibiting creativity, it is as though nobody is allowed to have a good time while they fume.

All of us have insecurities to some degree, but most of us are able to see them for what they are and stay rational, we certainly don’t inflict them on those around us.

If you are the insecure type, please remember that nobody is out to get you. You’re not the centre of everyone else’s life – we have our own problems and challenges to deal with – don’t add to our burden.
