The Great Acting Blog: “Do What You Want To Do”
In Italian cinema during the 1950s, film actors’ voices were dubbed with those of theatre actors. There was nothing wrong with the way they spoke, they were dubbed because film acting at that time was not considered to be respectable, and film actors were thought of as technically inferior. So stage actors were brought in to add respectability and prestige.
Oh how things change. To make it in the movies now, is to be at the very pinnacle of the profession, feted with fame, fortune and adulation (even in Italy). And it wasn’t much more than a hundred years ago that the theatre itself was considered to be of ill-repute. Television even, has graduated to the realm of “art” whereas even up until a few years ago it was seen as cheap entertainment, certainly inferior to it’s big screen counterpart.
I wonder what other parts of our culture will make the magical journey towards respectability?
These shifting perceptions reveal to us that all these boundaries and classifications are, in truth, just fantasies, they are not real. The true lesson here however, is that we must do what we want to do, and not hold back because of a fear of not being accepted.
