The Great Acting Blog: “David Mamet Discusses His New Play”

Davis Mamet on terrific form discussing his new play, Bitter Wheat, inspired by an interchange he had with an actress, #metoo and Harvey Weinstein.

Here’s an excerpt from the interview….

INTERVIEWER: there are people trying to bring lawsuits against Harvey Weinstein, if they said it’s bit tasteless to base a play on him, what would you say?

MAMET: have you read the play?

INTERVIEWER: Bitter Wheat, no, I’d be thrilled to read the play if you send it to us.

MAMET: Well ok, let me ask you a question: these fictional women whom you put forward, who might say it’s a bit tasteless, in your imagination have they read the play?

INTERVIEWER: well, they won’t have done, they’ll be addressing the subject matter, won’t they, rather than the play, that’s true.

MAMET: Let me ask you, as an intelligent person, who has not read the play, do you think it’s tasteless?

INTERVIEW: I don’t know because I haven’t read the play.

MAMET: The question is read the play.
