The Great Acting Blog: “Create Your Own Mentor”

Perhaps you don’t have anyone to mentor you. Perhaps the people you’d like to have as mentors are not accessible to you or you don’t know anyone that could fit the bill.

Create one yourself.

You don’t actually  have to meet your mentor(s), it isn’t about having a formal agreement with someone to sit around a table every couple of months to chew the cud. It’s about learning and development. Create a mentor composite of the people you admire, people whose works speak to you deeply, people who you aspire to be like. Read everything they wrote, as well as all of the interviews they gave, contemplating their experiences. You will gain guidance from them, but eventually, you will become your own teacher, intensely self-reliant, making a habit of soaking up more and more knowledge and acquiring new skills. This independent way of working, will lead you to greater confidence, and finally to your own, personal vision.

Create your own mentor.
