The Great Acting Blog: “Being A Great Actor Is A Question Of Intent”
We do what we set ourselves to do.
If we set ourselves to become mediocre actors then that’s what we’ll we do. If we set ourselves to valiantly try to build an acting career before quitting after a few years, then that’s what we’ll do. If we set ourselves on becoming great actors, then that’s what we’ll do too.
I see no reason to strive to become anything less than a great actor. I see no point in setting ourselves to do anything else. To perfect our voice, to master an acting technique which gives us control of our work and holds up under pressure, to know how to analyse a script for action, to do only work we believe in, to be a friend to our colleagues, to be self-aware, to continually improve, to continually learn, to respect the audience, to treasure the form we’re working in, to use our imaginations.
Being a great actor is not a question of what you get out of it, it’s a question of intent. Â Our intent is under our control. Be intent then, on becoming a great actor.
