The Great Acting Blog: “Artistic Actors, Mediocre Actors & Personal Truth”

Mediocre actors don’t bother with the finer points of their work. They don’t think it matters because they don’t think anyone is paying close enough attention. They’re ham-fisted, obvious, and serve-up only what has worked before, re-creating rather than creating.

The artistic actor however, deals in personal truth – every moment of their work is interpreted through the prism of their own experience, i.e. – what each moment means to them. They eschew the safe and the generic, and venture into the land of true creativity; where they may be misunderstood, where their most strenuous efforts may be ignored or go unseen, where the best of themselves might go unappreciated, where they may be rejected, where they may be criticised.

Anyone can churn out formulaic work, there’s nothing riding on it. It takes guts to express your personal truth, to put it out there – those with the courage to continually do so, are committed to the idea of this form of expression and believe that it delivers the meaningful results they crave. And sometimes someone does pay close attention, and a true connection is established, a real communion takes place and organic emotion is created.
