The Great Acting Blog: “Actors Producing Films”

I stumbled upon two links separately but which were interconnected. The first, was a story that Cate Blanchett was to make her directorial debut and the second was a “top 10” list of first films by actors-turned-directors. Ralph Fiennes has a film coming out (The Invisible Woman) which he directs and stars in, as does John Turturro (Fading Gigolo). Factor in Greta Gerwig’s recent success as co-writer of Frances Ha and that Xavier Dolan currently has a film doing the festival circuit, and a picture emerges. More and more actors are producing their own work. It’s about control, artistic and career.

But the notion of the actor producing their own work still has such a bad wrap. Are we really expected to believe that the actors listed above are only doing it because “they cannot get work”?

If actors are casting around for role models, then they could do a lot worse than look at what the people mentioned in the first paragraph are doing.
