The Great Acting Blog: “Actors Deliver The Extraordinary”

“I don’t invent anything. I imagine everything… most of the time, I have drawn my images from the daily life around me. I think that it is by capturing reality in the humblest, most sincere, most everyday way I can, that I can penetrate to the extraordinary.”
Brassai

Whether it’s on stage or in front of camera, regardless of costume and character, and settings and props, regardless of all the paraphernalia, in the end, the actor only has himself, that’s all he’s got. The filmmaker has his camera, the musician his instrument, the painter his canvas, but the actor only has himself. Perhaps, in this age of technology and special effects, we actors can seem boring and limited in comparison. Our job however, to return to Brassai’s quote, is to use our imaginations, to be humble and sincere, and “penetrate to the extraordinary” . But unlike Brassai, we are not photographing the life around us, we do not use a camera – we use ourselves: our bodies, our faces, our character,  and “the extraordinary” that we deliver, is the revelation of our own personalities.
