The Great Acting Blog: “Accept Everything”
“Accept everything and get on with it.” – David Mamet
Sometimes, when we are working on a long term goal, we have to tolerate something less than ideal, something which may seem like drudgery. Is there a way round it? Perhaps, but what if we can’t see it? Or, we can see it but we’re not in a position to affect it? Do we abandon the long term goal because of this uncomfortable aspect?
Similarly with downside risks. Perhaps we are discouraged from even attempting a goal because we feel that the cost of failure is too high, that we’re not willing to repair the damage failure might cause.
Acceptance is the key here. Accept the drudgery, accept the price of failure. Once we do that, we can proceed with full focus and conviction because our worry dissipates, the gloom is lifted.
The alternative is to be put off altogether from striving for anything which might create discomfort [basically anything worth doing], or if we do proceed it will be at less than our optimum because we’ll be distracted by the potential difficulties. And that would be no good to us.
Accept everything and get on with it.
