The Great Acting Blog: “A Celebration Of The Theatrical Tendency”

Spitting Image was a British TV show running through the 1980s and 1990s. It used puppets to create grotesque caricature of public figures, primarily politicians but also artists and celebrities. The humour essentially came from taking the unique essence of an individual (or at least, the essence of their public persona), and exaggerating it.
I stumbled upon this scene entitled; “Dear, Dear Larry And Dear, Dear Johnny Have Tea”, a parody of Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud. It’s a wonderfully absurd piece, sending up the actor’s tendency to dramatise life. However, it is done with great affection, and actually serves as a celebration of the theatrical life.
