Noirish Project Blog: “A New Short Film Connected To The Feature”
The freak weather has once again forced us to move back the scenes we were going to shoot for Noirish Project. However, rather than do nothing, we have decided to improvise a new short film which will serve as backstory for the main feature film, as we did with Prelude earlier this year.
This new, as yet untitled short, will be an exercise in voice-over narration. There is no such device in Noirish Project proper, but I have always been interested in it, and always wanted to employ it, and play with it. So, this new short will be an exercise in the sound-image relationship, with the voice-over informing the visuals. I am not sure how far I am going to take this device – I may try to bend the voice-over away from the visual action and bring it back into line again, so as to create verbal tangents, or I may even have the the character describe the events as they unfold infront of us, so that the viewer will receive the same information twice simultaneously. In the end, the use of voiceover is, for me, a question of style as much as anything else.
For the basic plot, will see the film set well before Noirish Project, where Billy’s idea to steal the pearls is in it’s earliest stages. He is in the process of sketching out a plan for himself, the questions he is trying to answer will be; what to do after the pearls have been stolen? And, how to turn the pearls into cash? Afterall, Billy is just a regular guy, he has no links with the underworld. So, the journey of this short will be Billy trying find someone who can “offload” the pearls for him. And I wonder who that might be?
