Inspiration Vs Influences
When asked about what influenced Noir-ish Project, I find it almost impossible to say. Influences are nebulous. They can come from all sorts of places, we may not even be aware of what they are until after we have made our creative decisions. Often, we only realised that something influenced us long after the work was completed, and even then we’re not entirely sure that it did actually influence us at all – we can even trick ourselves about what did and didn’t influence us. And other times, we are influenced by someone or something that we’d rather not be.
I think inspirations are easier to discern. Inspirations are those artists and those works which open up doors in our imagination. They give us confidence in our own creative vision. They may not directly impact the making of a specific work, but they remove internal barriers and so we are able to proceed.
There are few things more practical than inspiration.
