The Great Acting Blog: “What Ignites Your Passion?”

If you’re going to do the scene, then you need to pick an action that ignites you, that ignites your passion. That’s why the director telling you how to play the scene is no good. How can he possibly know that his choice is interesting to you, or that it will make you want to act? He cannot.

Don’t sell yourself short. Don’t pick actions that you think are worthy, pick ones that get your blood up, that get you moving, pick actions you can’t wait to do.

That leads to exciting, creative acting.

Choose to do the things that ignite your passion. We don’t we want dry, boring, eager-to-please actors. We’ve got loads of those, we don’t need anymore of them. We want dynamic, forceful, intense, precise, creative actors. Rebel a little bit, mix it up a little bit, show a little bit of attitude. Misbehave, just a little bit. The audience doesn’t want to watch a nice, polite actor being nice and polite. They want to see an actor cut loose and do the things that they can only dream about. That’s why they bought a ticket in the first place.

Choose the things that ignite your passion. If you don’t know what they are, then find out.
