The Great Acting Blog: “The Way Of Independence And Peace”

Often, schmoozing and doing favours for colleagues is a means of gaining control over them (as is bullying, conversely – schmoozing can quickly turn into bullying and vice versa). The schmoozer intends to take advantage of the schmoozed, to use them. Ultimately, they want something for nothing.

They seek control because they intend to cut corners in their work and they need those around them to cover their backs, to cut them some slack, and schmoozing is an attempt to create that slack. The truth is, these people live in fear. While outwardly confident, they are inwardly frightened – frightened of being found out, frightened of losing their paper allies, frightened of showing their work the proper respect by doing it well. They see subterfuge everywhere because they think everyone else holds the same decrepit values that they do. There’s is a house made of cards.

Do your work properly. Commit to it and give everything. Become a master of technique, practice excellent professional habits, learn your lines so that you know them cold. Be immaculate in everything you do, in every dealing you have. Don’t do it just because somebody is watching, don’t do it for your director or your boss, do it for it’s own sake, do it because that’s how you want to live your life, do it for yourself. This way lies independence and peace of mind.
