The Great Acting Blog: “The Magic Of The Artistic Life”

“As you start to walk out on the way, the way appears.” — Rumi

I love this quote from Rumi because it reminds me of the magic of the artistic life, which is that we get to continually re-invent what it is. Whenever we begin the next project, whenever we open the next chapter in our lives, we create something new, discovering what it is as we go along. It reveals itself to us as we take more and more action. It is a life of discovery and awe.

It is not easy however, to develop the strength to constantly face up to the unknown. This strength must be worked for and earned over time. Many never bother to undertake this journey, and consequently their work is dull and life less and lacking creativity. Others simply relieve the pressure by doing something else, something safer, more routine instead, where they know more or less what is going to happen month by month, and then just go through the motions of living.

Passion also helps us to keep attempting new challenges, to not settle, passion for the work that is. It gives us fuel to overcome the resistance to our work and our own fears. Again, many lack this passion or are unwilling to cultivate it within themselves, and again the results of their work are very ordinary. They lack the energy to face up to the unknown, which is essential for true creation.

An artist is someone who creates something which formerly existed only in their heart. Their life is dedicated to facing up to the questions posed by such an endeavour.
