The Great Acting Blog: “The Audience’s Sweet Delight”

I have written previously about the important impact the work of Jim Jarmusch has had upon me – but this evening I will find myself at a previewing screening of his new picture, Only Lovers Left Alive, which is then followed by a live show where musicians will play music from the film’s soundtrack, and this will include a performance by Jarmusch’s own band, Squrl. And frankly, I cannot wait. Few filmmakers create the anticipation in me the way Jarmusch does – his films are important to me. His visuals are among the purest, most unsullied out there, they are wrought with integrity, and feature amazing casts. No doubt, Only Lovers Left Alive will be another masterpiece, plus it features one of my favourite actors, the master, John Hurt. All this followed by a gig which includes the filmmaker himself, and needless to say, on a personal level, this all adds up to a pretty unique and thrilling night out.

Jarmusch is an inspiration to strive to do work that is meaningful to the audience, meaningful to an extent that they take a stake in it, they take a vested interest in our efforts – their interest being the preservation and continuation of the delight our work creates for them. Think of the actors, the filmmakers, the playwrights, the musicians, the writers, the artists, or indeed anyone else, whose work is important to you, whose work you are passionate about, whose work has had a long lasting and profound affect on you,  work which demonstrably improved your quality of life, and created for you a sweet delight …. That’s the calibre of work we should be aiming to produce ourselves.
