The Great Acting Blog: “Remain Open To The Art You Feel Within Yourself”

It’s so easy to allow the crush of daily life to dampen our creative spirits. Similarly with professional struggles and disappointments. Experience can lead us to narrow down our world in order to trick ourselves into thinking we have more control over it, and so make it less difficult. We try to fix our world in a clamp, because we think this will make it more predictable. In truth, all we really accomplish by doing this, is limit ourselves. We repress our true creative impulses and seek out empty, validictory, trophies, which may be forthcoming every now and again, but when they are not, what’s left? Not a lot.

We have to fight to ensure that we remain of a mind set which is open to creative possibility. We have to keep expanding our personality, not narrow it down. Undertaking a creative endeavour means starting something and not knowing where it’s going to go, to try and control it and force it to be predictable is to defeat it’s very purpose. This is true also of the creative life – so many are diminished by it because they cower before the uncertainty. Accept the uncertainty and act on creative impulses – never lose that mind set, because it’s the way to keep progressing, improving, striving, it’s the way to break personal bests, and above all, it’s a way to delve ever deeper into this art we feel within ourselves, and see what we might find.
