The Great Acting Blog: “Keep The Fire Burning Furiously”

I long to see the old fashioned kind of actor, the ones you read about from a by-gone era. They’re passionate and dominant, they thrust themselves forward: this is who I am they say, and this is what I think about the whole thing, and I don’t care if you agree with me or not! This is so much more preferable than the timid careerists we see today, terrified of making decisions, of causing offence, terrified of saying anything at all in fact. I long for an actor to lead. I don’t want an actor to show how cute they are or how cool they are or how whatever they are, I want them to burst forth because of the art inside of themselves, unable to resist giving it expression, shaping  it into a meaningful form and connecting it to the outside world.

The passionate impulse to perform is often quieted by the lack of access to work or the length of time it takes to get a project off the ground. So much so in fact, that many actors are tamed and their sharp edges blunted. It’s our job to resist that fate, it’s our job to keep the fire burning furiously.
