The Great Acting Blog: “Ignore The Siren Of Mediocrity – Keep Striving For Great Work”

We see incompetent actors doing well.
We see mediocre actors being feted.
We see actors we don’t rate being praised to the roof-tops by the critics.
We see actors we don’t respect, earning a fortune.

That is not a cue to join their ranks.
That is not a sign telling us we should stop striving.
That does not mean we should slacken our dedication.
That is not an excuse to become demoralised.

Stick to your guns.

If we don’t do great work now, we never will. Don’t wait to get where you want to go before doing great work – aim to do great work from the word go.

Do it for yourself. You may think “why bother” when doing OK work seems to be enough – but that is exactly what undedicated actors say to the dedicated. Don’t fall into that mindset. Do it for yourself.

Take your cue from your heroes, from those who inspire you and give you strength. They remind us of what we should be aiming for.

Ignore the siren of mediocrity, keep striving to do great work.
