The Great Acting Blog: “Generosity Drives Our Finest Work”

Mass media is driven by coercion rather than by generosity – preposterously budgeted  movies are marketed to us with such aggression, with such force and profligacy, that we go to see them more out of fear than any real interest. These films do not offer us very much, in fact the reverse is true, they exist in order to take from us, they seek to control us rather than to set us free.

Our work must come from a place of generosity, it must be driven by our longing to give  rather than our need to have. This giving, this generosity activates our finest qualities and inflects everything we do – it raises our spirits, we become passionate about our work, excited by the prospect of it, we become truly creative and dig deep to do our very best. When our intention is only to take however, we shrink, our best qualities recede into the background, we seek to copy rather than to create, we are motivated by fear rather than by passion.

As always, it’s up to us to decide which direction we want to take – in this instance, whether we want to create deprivation or abundance.

Generosity though, is a mindset we can get into once we listen our hearts.
