The Great Acting Blog: “Don’t Waste Good Acting Years – Shoot A Picture”

There are too many  actors out there letting good acting years drift by, there are too many actors with frustrated ambition, there are too many actors who quit due to lack of opportunity. There are too many actors chasing after work they don’t really want. It’s time to take control.

It’s never been easier to make a feature length film.  As Hal Hartley said, we can now make a world class feature on a desktop computer. Yet I see so few actors actually taking advantage of this situation.

However, filmmaking can seem like an impenetrable morass, overwhelming us before we’ve even begun. I was sent this advice Jerry Lewis gives as part of The Total Filmmaker, and I think it’s very useful for simplifying our thinking about filmmaking and getting started….

“… make film, shoot film, run film.

Do something.

Make film. Shoot anything.

It does not have to be sound.

It does not have to be titled.

It does not have to be color.

There is no have to. Just do.

And show it to somebody. If it is an audience of one, do and show, and then try it again.

That is how.

It sounds simple.

It’s not. Then again, it is.”

Thanks. I’m waiting to shoot a scene of a Taiwanese travel documentary TV show in Sinop Turkey right now. I’m a mandarin speaking Canadian w a bad case of bronchitis wishing this next week will pass quickly instead of being able to enjoy having interesting work. I wish to shoot a movie after Chinese New Year. I feel crappy. However, I’m so pleased that your sharing this quote has motivated me to shoot something, anything; in the year of the horse. Thanks for passing on the inspiration.

I don’t see a prompt or indication about how to start writing a blog. I want to know how to initiate one. Thank you..
